Children are eligible for an Orphan’s pension benefit when:
- The mother or father passes away and was insured at the time of death.
- The children are registered as the children of the deceased.
- The minor children have a legal representative. It is important to submit a ‘proof of guardianship’ or a ‘proof that they lived together with the deceased as a family’ (for example a Court of guardianship or court order). This is also applicable for foster children.
Children from 15 to 24 years old are also entitled to apply for an orphan's pension benefit if they are disabled, or if they are going to school for a full school year or term. The orphan has to prove that he or she is following a fulltime education by submitting on a yearly basis a school declaration. Children from 0 to 14 years old do not have to prove that they are enrolled in school.
